Backing Horses with The Frame: 10 Steps for a Solid Foundation (Week #1)

At The Frame, we believe that great sport horses aren’t just born — they are made through correct, thoughtful, and systematic development from their very first interactions with people. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Backing Horses With The Frame, a week-long, immersive educational experience designed for professional riders, trainers, and breeders who are ready to take their young horse development program to the next level.
Led by Martin Douzant and Joe DeSantis, who have started over 1,000 young horses between them, this program is based on the proven French system of progressive training, known as dix étapes vers la vie — ten steps toward a lifetime of success.
This is more than just a clinic — it’s a master class for professionals who want to set their horses up for long-term success in eventing, dressage, and jumping, while prioritizing both safety and correct foundations.
What to Expect: Participants will benefit from small group learning with a maximum of 4 participants, ensuring plenty of one-on-one instruction and hands-on practice each day. Each morning will begin with a lecture and discussion, followed by practical, hands-on sessions working with horses at various stages of development.
Over the course of the week, you’ll work through the 10 essential steps of starting young sport horses. By the end of the week, participants will walk away with practical tools and a clear system to take home and apply to their own programs.
Why This Master Class Matters: Backing Horses With The Frame is your opportunity to invest in your education and the future of your horses. With direct, guided experience and proven methods, you’ll leave with a stronger understanding of how to develop young horses safely, thoughtfully, and with their sport careers in mind.
Whether you’re a professional trainer, a breeder, or a working student looking to expand your skill set, this program will give you the knowledge and confidence to bring along young horses with a system that works — for both horse and rider.
