Ride the Pace: Open Country Training Series Workshop
90 minute sessions will run from 1 pm - 6:30 pm - indicate your time preference when signing up!
Riding well across country is not about speed—it is about pace, efficiency, and judgment. The ability to travel forward while maintaining balance, conserving your horse’s energy, and covering ground smoothly is a skill that defines experienced riders in the hunt field, at hunter paces, and on cross-country courses.
Ride the Pace is a four-session training series designed to help riders develop the feel and understanding needed to ride an efficient pace in open country. Drawing on principles used in steeplechase training and hunt field riding, this program focuses on developing a balanced, forward gallop while maintaining control, rhythm, and partnership with the horse.
Throughout the series riders will work on:
• Developing a balanced and sustainable open-country gallop
• Understanding the difference between pace and speed
• Learning to feel and maintain a consistent rhythm
• Adjusting stride and tempo while staying efficient
• Improving rider position for balance and conservation of energy
• Riding terrain and ground conditions with confidence
The goal of the series is to help riders develop the ability to ride with the pace of the country, rather than chasing it—allowing horse and rider to travel smoothly, efficiently, and confidently over ground.
This series is ideal for riders preparing for foxhunting, hunter paces, and lower-level eventing, and is designed for those who already ride forward but want to refine feel, pace judgment, and efficiency in open country.
Recommended for Starter, Beginner Novice, and Novice riders.
This series is made possible in part through support from the TEAPRO Grant, helping expand educational opportunities for riders in our community.
